It's just as well that Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel gave their team a late happy ending with bronze - they saved Germany's sailors from a second consecutive zero and their third in twelve years and almost single-handedly achieved 15th place in the 66-nation ranking. They sailed a great series right from the start and only allowed themselves one or two weaknesses towards the end, which cost them an even better placing.
Nevertheless, the DSV will not be able to avoid a painful analysis. Almost all of the other German starters have fallen far short of expectations.
